The Way of Discernment
How are we to live our lives thoughtfully and faithfully, individually and as a church, in the midst of all the forces, options, and decisions we need to navigate in these changing times?
The book, The Way of Discernment, helps us to discern God’s voice and guidance for how to live faithfully to God. It is a way of practicing Christian discipleship that is not “rule-based legalism.” It is relational and out of who God has made us.
The book defines discernment as “Discernment, the Christian practice of seeking God’s call in the midst of the decisions that mark one’s life”, so if you have a larger decision that you are discerning, you can do that with the different practices that you will learn. But this is not necessary, the discernment practices also foster awareness of how God is at work in the everyday and helps us to discern what faithful responses look like.
Why Participate?
Join a small group of people learning, practicing, and sharing about prayer practices that allow us to know God and know ourselves.
You may have decision(s) to make or you may just want to learn practices that help you bring your full self to God and learn to want what God wants.
You may have a sense of unsettledness you want clarity about or may have a particular place you want guidance.
Join in on Redeemer taking steps into in-person intergenerational gatherings.
Learn practices we can use together as a church as we navigate decisions we need to make as a leadership and congregation.
Structure
We will meet at 1224 Fairfax from 7-8:30 pm each Wednesday for 12 weeks from mid-January to mid-April (not including Ash Wednesday, March 2). We will spend 20-30 minutes learning about discernment, 10-15 minutes engaging in a discernment prayer practice, and 45-50 minutes sharing in consistent small groups of 4-6 people. We will be using the book, The Way of Discernment, by Elizabeth Liebert. Youth are welcome to sign up. We hope to provide childcare. We will not have a hybrid zoom/in-person option, but may have one or two small groups entirely on zoom, if needed and we have leaders for them.
